By David Dicks

I trace my passion for Puget Sound back to my childhood – when I was fortunate to spend summers with my family swimming, water-skiing and fishing in and around Hood Canal.

So I was honored when the governor appointed me Executive Director of the Puget Sound Partnership – a collaborative effort she and the Legislature created to protect and restore the entire Puget Sound ecosystem, from the snowcaps to the whitecaps.

Alpine Lakes Legislation Subject of Senate Congressional Hearing

pratt river valley 2 rick mcguire.jpgWashington, D.C. (10/29/09) — Taking a step towards permanent protection of the Pratt and Middle Fork River Valleys, Senator Murray (D-WA) submitted testimony at a hearing of the Public Lands and Forests subcommittee urging her colleagues to support the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Additions and Pratt and Middle Fork Snoqualmie Rivers Protection Act (S. 721). The legislation would expand the existing Alpine Lakes Wilderness by over 22,000 acres to include important lower-elevation lands and designate two rivers of great importance to the surrounding ecosystem as Wild and Scenic. WWC has played a leadership role in a local coalition that has worked over the last two years with many local stakeholders, including local businesses, elected officials, religious leaders, and recreation and conservation organizations. Recreation Leaders Support Wilderness Additions

expenlife_alpinelakeblog_[joelake_1.jpgSeattle (10/06/09) — Wilderness preservation is important to a variety of stakeholders. Recently many leaders in the recreation industry supported the current legislation (H.R. 1769 / S. 721) to expand the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and protect the Pratt and Middle Fork Snoqualmie Rivers.

Exped LLC, makers of tents and other outdoor gear, talks about their support in a recent blog post:

"Less than an hour away from the Exped LLC offices, east of Seattle, is a section of the Cascade mountains known as the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. It is a remarkably beautiful place we and our local customers visit often. It is also home to wildlife and groves of ancient trees. In short, it is one of the places where the soul of the Pacific Northwest can be experienced directly." READ MORE. See more supporters for protecting Alpine Lakes, Please Click Here.

Sen. Cantwell’s and Rep. Inslee’s bill would ensure lasting protection

dscn0198.jpgWashington, D.C. (10/01/09) — Today Washington’s U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-01) and U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D) introduced bipartisan legislation to protect 58.5 million acres of roadless national forests, including two million acres in Washington State. The Inslee-Cantwell Roadless Area Conservation Act of 2009 (S. 1738/H.R. 3692) would protect the nation's few remaining non-wilderness roadless forests from commercial development by effectively reinstating the Clinton-era roadless rule.To view the Press Release Please Click Here.

House Committee Approves Wild and Scenic Legislation for the Illabot Creek

illabot creek.jpgWashington, D.C. (09/11/09) — The House Natural Resources Committee has approved legislation introduced by U.S. Representative Rick Larsen (WA-02) and U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) to designate Illabot Creek in Skagit County as a Wild and Scenic River.  The Committee approved the legislation (H.R. 1593) unanimously on a voice vote yesterday.

Murray and Larsen’s legislation, which has the support of local stakeholders including elected officials, conservationists, fishermen, and farmers, prohibits dams and other water projects that impair the free-flowing nature of Illabot Creek. Illabot is vital spawning habitat for numerous threatened and endangered species, including bull trout and Chinook salmon. Having been approved by the House Natural Resources Committee, this legislation will next be considered by the full House of Representatives. To view the Press Release Please Click Here.
